Every now and then human beings are born "just stuck together" as the conjoined Hensel girls would tell you. Sometimes they can be safely separated and sometimes they can't. Either way they are human beings who possess all that makes us human. They love, laugh and have a sense of humor. They play, work and have ambition. They depend upon family and friends to help make their lives rich and full.

Joined at Birth is about amazing people known as conjoined twins. It's not the first documentary about conjoined twins, but it is possibly the most comprehensive. We look at all the ways humans are born conjoined and examine the interesting challenges and difficult choices those twins and their families face.

It was also important to present a historical and scientific foundation upon which to build our story. Why have conjoined twins been called 'Siamese' twins? How often are they born? How many survive? How are they connected and how does that effect their chances of separation? And what if separation is not possible - what are their lives like? We take on each of these questions by meeting six sets of conjoined twins and examining life from their perspective.

For all of us this production was a labor of love and an incredibly rewarding experience. Everyone involved talked about understanding more about themselves, their prejudices and their fears. We felt a responsibility to tell stories accurately and to not violate the unique connections we had established. We hope our message; conjoined twins are not better or worse than we are, just different, comes across through the stories we tell.
